Welcome to RAJIV GANDHI INSTITUTE OF VETERINARY EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
The Pondicherry Veterinary College later renamed as Rajiv Gandhi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAGACOVAS) is now renamed as the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER). The Pondicherry Veterinary College Society (PVCS) is governed by the Board of Governors with the Secretary (Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare), Government of Puducherry as the Chairman and the Dean, RIVER as Member-Secretary. Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research is fully funded by the Government of Puducherry and affiliated to the Pondicherry University. Since its inception the institute has made spectacular progress owing to the excellent support extended by the Board of Governors and the Government of Puducherry. The Academic Departments have been established as per the mandatory stipulations of the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and the current faculty strength is 56. The faculty are from reputed colleges and institutions of the country. VCI has recognized the BVSc & AH degree program offered by this institute with effect from 25/11/1999, the day the first batch of students completed their five year course. The BVSc & AH degree awarded by this institute is included in the First Schedule of Indian Veterinary Council (IVC) Act.
Currently, the institute admits 80 students for its 5 ½ year B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme. Out of the 80 seats, 30 seats are allotted to the students from UT of Puducherry under Government Quota, 10 seats are allotted to the students from UT of Puducherry under Self-Supporting (UT of Puducherry) Quota. 12 seats are allotted to the students under 15% all India quota, selected by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI), New Delhi, 5 seats to students of Government of Goa, 4 seats to the NRI students or wards of NRI parents, 2 seats to the Foreign National students and 17 seats to Self-supporting (National) category. The admission to all seats except students from Goa and VCI is being carried out by the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC), Government of Puducherry. The Institute also offers Post Graduate Program (Master of Veterinary Science-MVSc) in Eleven Disciplines namely Livestock Products Technology (LPT), Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education (VAE), Veterinary Biochemistry (VBC), Veterinary Microbiology (VMC), Veterinary Pathology (VPP), Veterinary Surgery & Radiology (VSR), Veterinary Gynaecology & Obstetrics (VGO), Veterinary Medicine (VMD), Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology (VPE), Veterinary Parasitology (VPA), Livestock Production and Management (LPM). Financial assistance to a total of INR 65, 00,000 (Rupees Sixty Five Lakhs Only) was accorded to the Institute under FIST Program by SERC Division, Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India for 5 years to strengthen the Teaching and Research facilities.
In recognition of its dedicated services in the area of Veterinary Education and Research, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has awarded 2(f) and 12(B) Status to the Institute under the UGC Act of 1956. This recognition would enable the Institute to get funds from the UGC under the Five Year Plan Grant and from other Funding Agencies that include DBT, DST etc. Further, the Institute has added another feather to its cap with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution of the UGC awarding ‘A’ Grade valid for a period of five years from 10.07.2014. In keeping in line with e-Governance initiatives, the Institute is adopting e- Tendering / e-Procurement process through the Government of Puducherry portal at https://pudutenders.gov.in. The Institute is an active participant in the annual web-based All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by Ministry of Human Resource Development since 2010-11 covering all higher education institutions in the country (http://aishe.gov.in).
